A Study of Serum Calcium and Magnesium in Pregnant Woman

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the alterations of the serum calcium and magnesium in pregnant women.
Serum calcium and magnesium were measured in 30 normal nonpregnant women, 79 normal pregnant women (comprised of 23 first trimester, 25 second trimester, and 31 third trimester.), 30 toxemic pregnant women (comprised of 30 preeclampsia).
The following are the result of the analysis,
1. The mean vlaue of serum calcium in normal non-pregnant women was 9.200.36mg%.
The mean value of serum calcium was slightly increased in first trimester group, and slightly decreased in second trimester group. The mean value of serum calcium¢¥ was more decreased in third trimester as 8.680.53/, and it was significant statistically.
2. The mean value of serum calcium revealed slight fall compared with normal non-pregnant women in preeclampsia. The decrease in measurable serum clacium is probably best explained on the basis of physiologic gestational hypervolemia.
3. The mean value of serum magnesium in normal non-pregnant women was 1.760.18mEq/L.
It revealed slight fall in first and second trimester group, and lowest value (1.570.14mEq/L) in third trimester. The last one was significant statistically compared with normal non-pregnant group.
4. The mean value of serum magnesium in preeclampsia had no significant difference compared with normal non-pregnant group.
